How To Grow Broccoli From Seed

Don’t overlook including broccoli (Brassica oleracea) in your vegetable garden, as growing broccoli is ultimately a manageable task.

Here’s how to cultivate broccoli in your garden:

  1. Seed Planting:
    • Growing broccoli from seeds is feasible, especially for a fall harvest.
    • For a summer harvest, initiate sowing in early spring.
    • Start sowing seeds in mid-summer for a fall harvest.
    • A summer crop takes six to eight weeks, while a fall crop requires only five to six weeks.
    • When cultivating spring seedlings, allow them exposure to cold weather for hardening off, but shield them from excessively freezing temperatures.
  2. Tips for Successful Growth:
    • Broccoli thrives in cooler seasons, preferring temperatures between 18 and 24°C. Adjust your planting time based on your region’s climate.
    • Spring planting may lead to a prolonged harvesting period, so exercise caution before temperatures rise significantly.
    • Plant broccoli with rows 90cm apart and individual plants spaced 30 to 60cm apart.
    • Optimal soil for broccoli is well-drained with a texture between sand and clay loam, maintaining a pH level between 5.8 and 6.5.
    • While broccoli typically requires ample sunlight, it can tolerate partially shaded areas in the garden.
    • Consistent and adequate watering is crucial for broccoli. Water the garden in the morning to ensure foliage is dry before sunset. Moisturize the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches, avoiding shallow root development.
    • Provide sufficient nutrients by applying fertilizer before planting or sowing broccoli in the ground.
  3. Harvesting Broccoli:
    • Broccoli is generally ready for harvest 65 to 70 days after planting.
    • Harvest broccoli heads when they measure between 8 to 15cm.
    • To harvest, cut the main stem about 15cm below the head.
    • Some varieties may produce smaller secondary heads after harvesting the main head.
    • Ensure flower buds remain closed for optimal harvest; if the plant reaches flowering, it’s too late for harvesting.

Cultivating broccoli in your garden involves strategic timing, proper spacing, and attention to watering and nutrient needs. Following these guidelines can result in a successful broccoli harvest with flavorful and nutritious heads.
